DivX is a brand name of products created by DivX, Inc. (formerly DivXNetworks, Inc.), including the DivX Codec which has become popular due to its ability to compress lengthy video segments into small sizes while maintaining relatively high visual quality. The DivX codec uses lossy MPEG-4 Part 2 compression, also known as MPEG-4 ASP, where quality is balanced against file size for utility. It is one of several codecs commonly associated with "ripping", whereby audio and video multimedia are transferred to a hard disk and transcoded.
DVD players incorporating the DivX feature are becoming ever popular. For example if you download a program or movie from say iTunes for example, you will be able to burn it to a standard recordable CD or DVD and play it on your DVD player. You can get the most out of videos, images and music and play them all on your TV, thanks to a DVD player compatible with DivX.
I love to watch TV programs such as Heroes, Lost, Prison Break, Jericho and 24. Using sites such as iTunes I am able to download the episodes as they are out in the States, or ones that I have missed for whatever reason. I then burn them onto a standard recordable CD on the PC and I can then watch them on the TV through the DivX enabled DVD player, instead of having to watch it on my PC or laptop. You can also use recordable DVDs as opposed to recordable CDs, thus enabling you to store much more media on each disc.
Prices for DivX compatible DVD players have come down in recent years and you can now pick them up for as little as £30. Not bad considering I paid £175 for my first one!!
The new focus on DivX enabled DVD players is the incorporation of HDMI upscaling and these start from approximately £45.
The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a compact audio/video connector interface for transmitting uncompressed digital streams. It represents a digital alternative to consumer analogue standards such as Radio Frequency (RF) coaxial cable, composite video, S-Video, SCART, component video, D-Terminal, and VGA. HDMI connects digital audio/video sources such as set-top boxes, Blu-ray Disc players, personal computers, video game consoles, and AV receivers to compatible digital audio devices, computer monitors, and digital televisions.
